gnurou.org switched to Drupal

Finally, I've put some decent site here. After trying many CMS solutions, I've decided to use Drupal.

Drupal is actually the only one (of those I have tested, at least) that supports all the features I wanted:

  • Combines static pages with blog posts. I like to rant here and there but the main purpose of this site is to publish static content.
  • A comment system, trackbacks and ping, just like any blog software. To combine the best of both worlds.
  • Total control over the layout of the site (not that I did anything big about it - the current theme is just a slightly modified version of the Pushbutton theme). Oh, and standards compliance is a must too.
  • WYSIWYG editor (TinyMCE) for both content and comments, also offering an easy way to upload images and other files. I'm fine with wiki-like syntaxes, but a good editor just gives another level of comfort.
  • Powerful control on what is authorized or not. Ability to disable unwanted engine mechanisms (user registration, etc.).
  • Nice URLs with explicit names. The URL alias mechanism is really powerful.
  • Page caching to be easy with my poor server, although this is not turned on right now. Surprisingly, and although the pages are generated on-the-fly for now, the site performs rather well.
  • Tags for anything that is published. I love tagging.
  • RSS feeds for tags, content type, and so on. Drupal support RSS feeds as-is but more personalized feeds can be created using the views module.
  • A strong and large community.

Now that the site is up and running I'm really satisfied with it. Although it has plenty of features, the modular design of Drupal let you use only those that are strictly necessary. You can really and easily tailor a website to your will. Drupal is a very active project, able to cover a wide range of needs. I've also closely considered Geeklog, which was very close to my needs too. But in the end, Drupal seems to have a much wider community and zillions of more-or-less useful modules, so I finally decided to use it.

Internet and Linux free resources for learning Japanese

This page links to free ressources for people studying Japanese, including online courses, online tools, software and browser extensions. There are many books and kinds of courses available in exchange of your money - however, I've got better results using the following online courses combined with the tools presented below. And it's much more fun, too.

Romenux

Rome MP3 PlayerThis program allows you to communicate with the Rome UP-301 MP3 player under (probably) any *nix OS. It has been tested and is known to work under GNU/Linux.

Please note that this program ONLY supports the UP-301 model. It's the first released of the rome players that plugs into your parallel port. Further models (USB ones) are NOT supported, and will probably never be by this program, as I don't own any of them.

Sharp Zaurus ports

I love small and sexy devices like the Sharp Zaurus. I own a SL-5500 and at some time I maintained a few Zaurus Ports of various libraries and games I wanted to see running on it. Since the Zaurus is Linux-based, it was fairly easy.

As of today, most of this software (probably in much more recent and better packaged versions) is available from Openzaurus, but my feed is still active. Please note, however, that I don't give any support for this out-of-date software and that you definitely should seek more recent feeds!

My .ipk feed's address: http://www.gnurou.org/software/zaurus/feed/ (last updated: 2004/03/28)

If you own a SL-C7xx model (or any model which shape is different from the picture at the top of the page), you might prefer to use the SDL package provided at this page instead of the one I provide. It is compatible with the games packages of my feed, but should give you a correctly-oriented screen (not tested!).

Older Karmascrobbler releases

Here are the older Karmascrobbler releases. You really shouldn't use any of them and instead get the latest karmascrobbler release. These files are only here for history.

Karmascrobbler

Rio KarmaThis little Java program let you update your Last.fm (or any Audioscrobbler-powered site) profile with the tracks you played on your Rio Karma.

Right now, it's a command-line program only - I plan to add a GUI though. It should work on any Java-capable system. Please don't hesitate to send me feedback, requests, or comments about it.

Adonthell

I used to contribute lot of code (most related to low-level graphics and map engine) to this free graphical RPG similar in feeling to good old console games. Unfortunately I don't have free time for now, so I had to take my distances with the project.

Adonthell not only needs coders, but also graphic artists, musicians, writers, in short every person that might bring something to this kind of game. Don't hesitate to have a look at the site or contact us on the mailing lists if you want to contribute!
